What happened to New York Yankees Player Brett Gardner’s son Miller Gardner? Cause of death revealed

Miller Gardner aged 14 Years, passed away suddenly on a vacation, his parents told in a statement on Sunday, 23 March 2025.

Reason of death for Miller Gardner, the teenage son of New York Yankees player Brett Gardner, has been confirmed, according to a new report.

The 14 year-old son of Brett, 41, and his wife Jessica Gardner died by asphyxiation “after a possible intoxication after apparently ingesting some food,” Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Agency told NBC News on Monday, March 24.

PEOPLE has also reached out to the agency.

A toxicology test and official autopsy are currently pending, Garcia added. The results could take two to three months.

On March 23, the Yankees X official account posted a statement from the couple, revealing that their son, Miller Gardner aged 14 Years passed away suddenly during a vacation with loved ones.

“With heavy hearts, we regret to inform that our youngest son, Miller, has passed away,” the couple started. “He was 14 years old and has departed much too early after becoming ill along with several other members of our family while on holiday.”

“We have more questions than we have answers at this time, but we do know that he died peacefully in his sleep during the morning of Friday, March 21st,” they went on.

The couple then said Miller was “a beloved son and brother,” and added, “We can’t yet begin to understand our life without his contagious smile.”

The pair — who married in 2007 and also have another son, Hunter Gardner — were also thankful to “all who have reached out to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time.”

“We have faith that our family, friends, and faith will see us through this unimaginable loss. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Miller’s teammates and friends and to all the other families who have lost a child too early as we all mourn,” they said. “We ask you to respect our request for privacy as we grieve and look for healing.”

The couple did not specify where they were on vacation at the time of the incident, or their son’s cause of death.
